Stephen Bloch, M.D.
Chairman
Stephen Bloch joined Canaan Partners in June 2002, initially as a Ewing Marion Kauffman Fellow. His investment targets include biopharmaceuticals (therapeutics and diagnostics), medical devices and healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Bloch currently serves on the Board of Directors for Advanced Biohealing, Amicus Therapeutics, Marinus Pharmaceuticals, OmniSonics Medical Technologies and Viacor.
Prior to joining Canaan, Dr. Bloch was a medical entrepreneur and practicing physician. He founded and was CEO of Radiology Management Sciences, a risk manager of diagnostic imaging services for health plans and provider networks. As medical director, he helped start Omnisonics Medical Technologies which is developing breakthrough products using acoustic energy for the treatment of vascular occlusive diseases. Additionally, he co-founded TeleRad, a teleradiology services company, and was an initial investor in OpenAir.com, an enterprise software company for professional services firms. Dr. Bloch started his business career as a strategic consultant with Arthur D. Little focused on pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
Dr. Bloch received his medical training as a radiologist at The Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and in internal medicine at The Lenox Hill Hospital/Cornell Medical School. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He also received a M.A. in history of science and public policy from Harvard University and an A.B. degree in history from Dartmouth College.
Dr. Bloch became Chairman of the Marinus Pharmaceuticals board in October 2007.
John M. Krayacich
President, Chief Executive Officer and Director
John Krayacich joined Marinus Pharmaceuticals in 2008 as President, Chief Executive Officer and Director after serving as the global head of neuroscience project management at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. As part of his role at Novartis, Mr. Krayacich acted as vice president and global program head of agomelatine, the first melatonergic antidepressant, and led the neuroscience drug development teams in the areas of major depressive disorder, general anxiety disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and bipolar disorder.
Prior to joining Novartis in 2003, Mr. Krayacich was Vice President of Worldwide Marketing (neurology) at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for a global marketing strategy and new product development.
Mr. Krayacich has more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry with an emphasis on neurology product development and marketing. He started his career with Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert Canada and advanced through a series of assignments in sales, North American and worldwide marketing, business development and global drug development. His work has included the development and commercialization of Lipitor®, Neurontin®, Lyrica®, Accupril®, Exelon® Patch, Focalin XR® and several neuroscience new chemical entities currently in development.
Mr. Krayacich previously held board positions with the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the New Jersey Epilepsy Foundation.
Nicole Vitullo
Director
Nicole Vitullo joined Domain in 1999 and became a Partner in 2004. She has full management responsibility for Domain Public Equity Partners, L.P. and is also involved in distribution/liquidation strategies for the public companies in Domain Associates’ venture capital portfolios. Present board memberships include Calixa Therapeutics, Celator Pharmaceuticals, Marinus Pharmaceuticals, Ruxton Pharmaceuticals and VentiRx Pharmaceuticals. Past board memberships include Cerexa, Eunoe and Onyx Pharmaceuticals. From 1992-1999, Ms. Vitullo was Senior Vice President at Rothschild Asset Management, Inc. where she had responsibility for the U.S. public market investments of International Biotechnology Trust plc and Biotechnology Investments Limited. From 1991-1992, Ms. Vitullo served as the Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at Cephalon, a publicly traded biotechnology company. Prior to Cephalon, Ms. Vitullo spent 12 years at Eastman Kodak, most recently in Corporate Development where she was involved in the development management of Kodak’s venture capital activities.
Ms. Vitullo received her B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Rochester.
Anand Mehra, M.D
Director
Anand Mehra, M.D., joined Sofinnova Ventures in 2007 as a Principal to focus on biopharmaceutical investing. Dr. Mehra’s diverse background equips him to work with entrepreneurs on scientific, clinical, and strategic levels. Currently, he is a director of Marinus Pharmaceuticals, active in Anthera and Prestwick Pharmaceuticals, and played an instrumental role in the firm’s investments in Hyperion and PregLem. Prior to joining Sofinnova Ventures, Dr. Mehra worked in JP Morgan’s private equity and venture capital group, where he was heavily involved in investments made in Phenomix, Kemia, and CardioKinetix, management of their public portfolio, and the firm’s spin-out from the bank. Before joining the venture community, Dr. Mehra was a consultant in McKinsey & Company's pharmaceutical practice, advising pharma and biotech companies on key strategic issues, and an NIH-funded Fellow focused on reperfusion injury in stroke.
Dr. Mehra received his M.D. from Columbia Medical School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia.
Timothy M. Mayleben
Director
Timothy Mayleben is an advisor to life science and healthcare companies through his advisory and investment firm, ElMa Advisors. Prior to this he served as the President and Chief Operating Officer and a Director of NightHawk Radiology Holdings, Inc.
Mr. Mayleben was formerly the Chief Operating Officer of Esperion Therapeutics, which later became a division of Pfizer Global Research & Development. He joined Esperion in late 1998 as Chief Financial Officer. While at Esperion, Mr. Mayleben led the raising of more than $200 million in venture capital and institutional equity funding and later negotiated the acquisition of Esperion by Pfizer in December 2003 for $1.3 billion.
Prior to joining Esperion, Mr. Mayleben held various senior and executive management positions at Transom Technologies, Inc., now part of Electronic Data Systems, Inc., and Applied Intelligent Systems, Inc., which was acquired by Electro-Scientific Industries, Inc. in 1997.
Mr. Mayleben holds an M.B.A. with distinction from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and a B.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan Ross Business School. He is on the Advisory Board for the University of Michigan Wolverine Venture Fund and also serves as a director for several life science companies, both public and private.
